Hiking and walking
Hiking is one of best ways to see the nature of Kuusamo. The trails in Kuusamo vary greatly in length and difficulty, but they all lead the trekker to some of the most magnificent natural sites in the area. The most famous and popular hiking trails is the Karhunkierros Trail.
The landscape, ground and flora in the Oulanka National Park stretch over 270 square kilometres of unique riverside wilderness on the outskirts of the Kuusamo and Salla municipalities. Flowing out to the White Sea, the River Oulankajoki and its tributaries, most spectacularly the Kitkajoki River, carve their paths through deep valleys; their banks occasionally forced through rugged ravines, then once again releasing their waters into gushing torrents and waterfalls.
The nature woodland of the area is home to diverse flora and fauna. Many more and endangered species still thrive here; animals such as the golden eagle and plants like the calypso orchid (Calypso bulbosa), red helleboris (Epipactis atrorubens) and white campion (Silene furcata angustiflora).
