FINNISH RED CROSS INSTRUCTIONS

These instructions may save your life in the wilderness.

1. Plan your route.

  • Pay attention to weather conditions. Remember that the weather may change very suddenly.
  • Do not defy the forces of nature: snow storms, flowing water etc.
  • If you are unfamiliar with local conditions, ask for advice and heed it.
  • Let your friends, the local information centre, the ski rental agency or the hotel reception know your departure time, the planned route and when you plan to return.
  • Let them know when you have returned.

2. Do not make solitary excursion into the wilderness, do not fall behind or leave your group.

  • Sign your name in the guest book in huts and cabins.
  • Stay on the trail. Read any instructions posted along the route carefully.
  • Remember the hazard of avalanches or landslides on steep slopes.

3. Be realistic about your physical condition and health.

Do not overestimate your strength.

  • Know your limits. The mountainous terrain is unpredictable and full of surprises.
  • Dress right. Windproof but permeable clothes are best.
  • Freezing starts at fingers and toes.
  • Remember that the wind multiplies the effect of the cold.

4.Sense of direction is easily lost in the mountains or hills.

Take a map and a compass along at all times.

  • Take some food along even for a short excursion to fight fatigue.
  • Take fire making equipment along at all times.

5. If you get lost or feel tired, make a camp or look for shelter in time. It is difficult to make a camp properly when feeling exhausted and cold.

  • If you feel chilled, do not stop for a rest in the cold - keep moving.
  • If you are not sure of your whereabouts or of the right direction, do not start rambling. Keep your wits about you. Turn back in time if you can trace your tracks, or look for adequate shelter.
  • Keep yourself warm by moving or by making a fire.
  • Do not stop for a rest in a snow hollow in inadequate clothing.

6. When making a camp, the crucial thing is to make a fire and keep warm.

7. Stay calm in every situation - do not panic.

Be prepared for the worst at all times. Take instructions and warnings seriously.

The responsibility is yours!
